I still remember that whenever we used to go to dhabbas or some restaurants, these “Sirke Wale Pyaaz” were always placed on the table. But since we moved to the US, we didn’t find these here. We had been missing these since a long time, so I decided to make these at home. Super simple and quick to make. I usually make these at night and they are ready to serve the next night. The maximum time required is to just peel the onions. 😉

Let us see how these are made. J

Preparation Time: 10 mins    Cooking Time: 10 mins

All You Need:

  1. Pearl Onions- 250 grams
  2. Bay Leaves- 2
  3. Peppercorns- 15
  4. Sugar- 3 ½ tsp
  5. Salt- ½ tsp
  6. Beetroot- 1 (thinly sliced)
  7. Vinegar- 1 ½ Cups

A Few Tips:

  • Use a clean spoon every time you are serving these.
  • You can use white/ red onions. Also, if you don’t find the pearl onions, chop up the big ones to make them bite size.

Method:

  • Peel the onions and place them in a dry and clean jar.
  • Now, in a saucepan, add vinegar, bay leaves, peppercorns, sugar and salt.
  • Let the sugar dissolve.
  • Once the sugar dissolves, add beetroot. Let the mixture boil for 5 mins on low heat.
  • After 5 mins, remove the mixture from the flame and let it stand for 5 mins.
  • Using a strainer, pour the vinegar over onions in the jar.
  • Add 2 pieces of the boiled beetroot in the jar as well, this will give them an amazing color.
  • Place the closed jar in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
  • Serve with dinner. These taste super yum.
  • Do give it a try.

Thank you for the recipe. How long is the shelf life of these? Should I store them in refrigerator? Also, should I remove them from Vinegar after 24 hours?

      Hi Nidhi.
These sirke wale pyaaz have a shelf life of 3 weeks.
They have to be stored in the refrigerator.
You don’t have to remove the vinegar. Store them in the vinegar itself.
I hope you like the recipe. 😊
Also, a small tip, you could reduce the amount of vinegar as well if you don’t want a lot of that tangy flavor. 😊
Do let me know how they turned out. 😊😊
